When people learn techniques to solve Rubik's cubes, they are necessarily techniques that are simple enough for a human to remember. I did solve it, once, without cheating, with the help of this book, “The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube” by James G. Erno Rubik has made some other nasty little puzzles also. The days of Nourse's "The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube" being long gone, I started with the instructions in the box. I was pretty disillusioned when I found that out. Ive only figured out the Cube once. Yeah, I've never done it, but there are actually some really simple rules you can follow to do it you don't actually have to be an uber-genious. Since then Ive been too afraid to try again. New research establishes the relationship between the number of squares in a Rubik's-cube-type puzzle and the maximum number of moves required to solve it. He made a clock (Rubik's Clock) that is pretty puzzling, but the solution is somewhat easier to get than the Cube solution is. Intuition tells me that the amount of computation involved may grow quite rapidly as n increases, so we may not be able to answer this question for many values of n, but since the 3 x 3 x 3 case is known, it shouldn't be hard to solve the 2 x 2 x 2 case (in fact, the solution is known: in this case, God's number is 11). Remember when the Cube did NOT come with instructions? Life was cheap back then, wasn't it? People like me need assistance!
